DISCIPLINE
EACH STUDENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS OR HER OWN ACTIONS. Classroom disruptions and the breaking
of school rules will not be tolerated. A student initiated plan will often be the first step in trying to work things out.
Students who are chronic violators of school rules may be deprived of the opportunity to participate in off-site
activities. When there is a class trip, parents may be requested to accompany their child.
A teacher or administrator may detain a student after school. The expectation is that the detention will be served on the day of the infraction or on the next school day. The student will make transportation arrangements with parents on the day of the infraction in the presence of a staff member. If a teacher is unavailable to monitor the detention, the staff member in the Planning Area will be available to monitor the detention. An additional bus will leave school at 4:30 P.M.
Staff members will speak to students concerning inappropriate behavior. After being spoken to, if the student's behavior does not improve, the teacher will assign a time-out period. If after these two interventions the behavior continues, the student will be referred to an Administrator. Staff members should complete an administrative referral form detailing reason(s) for the referral.
· Administration may assign students to the Planning Area. Parents/guardians will be notified of this consequence. Students sent to the Planning Area may also be assigned to serve a detention. During the detention, students will be expected to meet with their classroom teacher. They will be responsible for obtaining any work they missed, as well as discussing the inappropriate behavior and coming up with a way to solve the problem. After meeting with the teacher, they will need to work on homework or read a book during the remainder of the detention. They may be assigned to do this work with the classroom teacher or with the Planning Area staff member.
· While students are assigned to the Planning Area, they are expected to process and develop a plan with staff members. This may include, but is not limited to, Administration, Guidance, School Therapist, SAP, the nurse and the Planning Area staff member.
· Frequent visits to the Planning Room may result in additional consequences including, but not limited to, suspension, loss of off-campus activities, home tutorial, or a referral to an Alternative Program.
· Students cannot participate in activities on days when placed in the Planning Room or when serving internal/external suspension. Activities include but are not limited to: intramurals, clubs, team practices/games, or dances.
D. LEARNING CENTER
When the student has completed an acceptable plan they will need to work in a quiet and independent manner in the learning lab. This will allow staff members the opportunity to see if the student is ready to resume their regular schedule. They are expected to work on school/homework or to read quietly. Students who cannot work in this manner will need to call home. If they cannot work appropriately in the Learn Lab they will not be allowed back into class. They will need to have a parent come to school and take them home.
When externally suspended, students are not allowed on school property during school hours. Students who come on school property during external suspensions will have their suspension extended. They also cannot participate in or attend activities. Students are responsible for initiating arrangements to make up all work and tests missed.
